World Environment Day: Guerbet pursues its commitment to the climate
World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5 since 1974. It is a United Nations celebration designed to enlighten public opinion and give individuals, businesses and communities a sense of responsibility for protecting and improving the environment.
How do we integrate the environment into our activities?
Aware of ecological issues, Guerbet is pursuing its development in a sustainable manner. The company is committed to reducing its environmental footprint across its entire scope of activity, from raw material sourcing to the production of contrast media and medical devices, right through to delivery to customers. The Group is committed to controlling its processes and waste while seeking to innovate in order to reduce their impact, and takes into account the challenges of climate change.
What are our targets for reducing our carbon footprint?
Guerbet has strengthened its Climate Strategy to better meet the challenges of sustainable performance and transformation. In 2022, after updating its carbon footprint for all its activities, Guerbet is committed to reducing its carbon emissions in absolute terms, i.e., regardless of activity, between 2021 and 2032:
For more details on scopes 1, 2 and 3, please refer to the box below (i) Going further.
These targets were validated in March 2023 by SBTi (Science-Based Targets), an initiative that encourages ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets. Guerbet thus joins the list of companies taking action (https://sciencebasedtargets.org/companies-taking-action), and becomes one of over 4,000 companies and financial institutions recognized as players in the fight against global warming, with science-based greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
What does this change?
For several years now, Guerbet has been implementing programs aimed at reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, such as actions to reduce energy consumption at its industrial sites:
- Boiler replacement in Rio and Dublin
- Recycling of a high-calorific solvent to replace gas at the Lanester incinerator
- Purchase of an osmosis unit at Aulnay
- Recovery of acetic acid waste at Marans
This validation of our objectives by the SBTi reinforces our approach and commits us to our external stakeholders. To achieve these objectives, Guerbet is reinforcing its action plans in the following key areas, and each employee has a role to play:
Future projects have already been identified, and some are already being deployed:
- Installation of solar panels in Dublin (post to be found here)
- Supply of 100% wind-generated electricity in Rio via renewable energy certificates
- Boiler replacement in Lanester
First concrete results
Finally, we already have the first results of our 2022 carbon footprint on scopes 1 & 2, and we observe a 4% drop in emissions compared with 2021. This is a first encouraging sign of our efforts.
Today, June 5, is an opportunity to thank all Guerbet teams who contribute on a daily basis to reducing Guerbet's impact on the environment. We are counting on everyone's commitment to go even further. Let's keep up the momentum!

The study carried out in 2022 confirmed the significant items, namely purchasing, energy and transport. These three items account for over 80% of the Group's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
